Abstract

Solid wastes collection and disposal are among the most important activities done to conserve the environment and to enhance public hygiene. Current methods for urban solid waste disposal include;
land filling, incinerating and recycling.
Initially, current methods for collection and land filling in Karaj were studied. It was observed that solid waste collection and land filling are done primitively. Solid wastes are just piled in IIHALGHE-DARREH" landfill center. No sanitary activity is performed at the site, based on field
observations. In order to determine the recycling possibility of Karaj solid wastes, the wastes were qualitatively examined and the ingredients were sampled over a 6 month period including summer and fall. Overall results have shown that compost able materials (78.4%), plastics (6.1 %), paper (5.9%), textiles (1.9%), glass (1.6%), metals (1.5%), bone (0.8%), wood (0.5%), and other materials (3.4%)
are the main ingredients.
The study has shown that 78.4 percent of the domestic solid waste is suitable for composting and
17% for recycling and reuse
