Study on the effect of Strand Orientation and Resin Content on The Properties of Strand board From Populous nigra

Abstract

in order to evaluate the effect of strand alignment and resin content on the properties of strand board
th is study was conducted. Boards were made from poplar wit h three types of orientation (random. Face stran ds aligned and co re strands random. face strands aligned and eore strands cross aligned ). And phenol-formaldehyde resin at two levels (5% and 7%1). Board's thickness of 10 mrn, press time of 3 minutes, and pres s temperature of 200°C were sele cted. Mechanical as well as physical properties were evaluated. according to ASTM 01037. Results showed that fac e strand alignment has a significaut effect on boards bending properties that would result in great increase in modulus of elastic ity as well as modulus of rupture (5 1% and 46% respectively ). Core strand alignment has no effect on bend ing properties but leads to a significant dec rease in interlaminar shear strength. In boards with three aligned layers, water absorption and thickness swelling were significantly less than those in other boards. The increase in resin content has significant effect on all the other properties and causes their enhancement.
