Abstract

The main objective of this study was to determine the optimum size of the grazing units for Sistani nomads I rangeland. In this research, some data on range condition and grazing capacity, animal
production and socio-economic situation of the users were collected and carefully analyzed.
The results have shown that animal population in the both quarters of south of Khorasan and
around the Hamoon Lake was above grazing capacity. In spite of high productivity of Baluchi sheep, due to deficiencies in nutrition and relatively high mortality caused by migration, efficiency of animal
husbandry was low. However, it is possible to create an equilibrium between man needs, rangeland
and animals. This task needs a serious cooperation between related organizations.
The minimum area of rangeland for each pastoral unit was determined about 90 hectares in lowland and 222 hectares in uplands under current situation. In case of dwelling of the nomads in one
of the regions, the required range area increased to about 810 hectares in uplands and about 155
hectares in lowlands.
